Oak Web Works

Back in the 90’s (wow I sound old) I began my career as a webmaster which was before Twitter, Google, Facebook, iPads and smartphones. I was the webmaster of a sign manufacturing company in South Hadley, MA (near Amherst) in 1997 and learned a lot about the web while at this job.

After a little while I found a position at a web design firm in Connecticut where my learning continued. Through the years I have worked for and helped companies as diverse as Intel, Data Translation and M.I.T.

Eventually, I started my own web design and marketing firm called Oak Web Works, LLC. I operated it first in Waltham, MA, a town right outside of Boston and then moved to the western Massachusetts area which is where I am originally from.

Today happens to be the day Google is rolling out a new major algorithm update that boosts sites in the rankings on smartphones if they are mobile-friendly. If you find your organization needs a new website, or needs to become more visible online, please contact me.

First Gig in A Long Time

I was in a band called Artomatic which is an improvisational trio. I play bass and there is a keyboard player and a drummer.

We’ve been practicing weekly for a year and a couple weeks ago we had our first gig. And it was the first gig I have played in a long time. The show was at a place called Workshop13, which is an old church converted into a cultural center.

It’s a very cool place and the alter was our stage. Behind us was a large white wall which we used as a screen that we projected psychedelic images onto. We also had lots of stage lights, lasers and smoke machines, so the vibe was excellent. Tables and chairs were put where the pews used to be and we had a decent audience who seemed to enjoy the show.

Update 8/22/14: We’re playing another gig tonight at the same venue, but tonight we’re going to be the house band for an open mic night.

Jason OConnor Bass Player

Among other things, I am an electric bass player. I have been playing since I was 8 years old and settled into jazz, funk and rock as my preferred styles to play. I play  a four-string, six-string and fretless, have taken lessons from Berklee College of Music bass teachers and session bass players in L.A., and I have given lessons to students for a long time as well. I’ve played with jazz, rock and fusion bands in L.A., NYC and Boston over the years and currently I’m playing with a fusion improvisational band in Western Massachusetts. You can hear samples of my playing here and here and here.

Quotes and Sayings I’ve Been Trying to Live By

Whether I have them on stickies on my PC monitor, Tweeted them recently, repeat them to myself in my mind or have simply connected with the wisdom, there are certain quotes, phrases or sayings that have particular meaning and resonance for me these days. Here they are.

  • Let go or be dragged.
  • Wanna be right or you wanna be married?
  • Never underestimate others’ actions being motivated by feelings of inadequacy.
  • Don’t let great be the enemy of good.
  • You can bury your emotions, but you bury them alive!
  • The only way past difficult emotions in through them.
  • Don’t compare your insides with others’ outsides.
  • Don’t let a terminal diagnosis from your doctor get you to start living and appreciating every moment. Do it now.
  • It is almost never about ‘me’. It is almost never about ‘Jason OConnor’.
  • I’m too old to know everything.
  • When you fight with reality, reality wins, but only 100% of the time.
